In & Around Wandsworth

St Anne's Church, Wandsworth

There was a war in Wandsworth: the parishioners wanted their church bounded by an oak fence, the Bishop wanted railings. When the parishioners went ahead with their fence, the Bishop threw a wobbly and refused to consecrate the churchyard. Hence this magnificent church is surrounded not by a graveyard, but shrubberies and a lawn.

St Anne's was designed after the victories of Waterloo and Trafalgar by the architect of the British Museum, Robert Smirke.

The Alma Public House, York Road

The Alma pub is opposite Wandsworth Town Station and the name commemorates the Crimean Battle of Alma in 1854.

There is a circular hole in the sign - as if it had been struck by cannon fire.

Wandsworth Town Hall

  • The town hall was designed by Edward A Hunt in the 1930s

  • The foundation stone was laid by the Duke of Kent on June 11, 1935

  • The building was opened by Queen Mary on June 14, 1937

  • Stunning art deco stairway: available for marriages, photo shoots, feature films and tv
